The Mississippi Book Festival
Yesterday, the hubby and I went to the Mississippi Book Festival, and the main reason I wanted to be there was to support my mentor, Deesha Philyaw.
Deesha was in conversation with Jerid P. Woods, whose questions were thoughtful, searching, and so well considered. He gave her room to share not only about her work, but also the wisdom behind it. Deesha has a way of being both brilliant and generous with what she knows. Every time I’m around her, I leave having learned something—and feeling more encouraged in my own writing life.
We also got an early copy of The True Confessions of First Lady Freeman, ahead of its official release next week. Having Deesha sign it made an already special day even sweeter.
The festival itself was wonderfully organized. It was easy to enjoy the conversations, browse the books, and feel part of a community that loves stories as much as I do. I’ll definitely be back next year.
My one regret? I didn’t get to meet Nikesha Elise Williams. I’ll have to make that a priority next time.
Thanks boo for making the trip with me and for always showing up for the things that matter to me. Having you there made the day even better.❤️ Everybody grab The True Confessions of First Lady Freeman from your local indie bookstore! It’s out Tuesday, September 29th 🥳
